Crafting

The forge knows 162 gear recipes and 9 material recipes, fed by a 17-step refining ladder. Crafting feeds gear upgrades, quest turn-ins and some of the best endgame attributes — see the enchanting guide for the bonus rolls.

How it works

  1. Gather. Buy tools from the crafting-area NPC. The broom sweeps powder from dirt floors, the pick mines ore from lava holes and mineral veins, the hoe digs soil from resource spots. A green effect means success, red means try again, poff means the spot is empty.
  2. Refine. Take the raw material to a lit oven and drop it on the fire. Each rung of the ladder below is one refinement, and a failed roll destroys the material.
  3. Craft. Every recipe needs a minimum crafting mastery and lists its ingredients and success chance. Higher tiers are deliberately harder — see the table below. Failure breaks part of the materials, and mastery protects them up to a point.
  4. Enchant & upgrade. Gear recipes roll a bonus attribute onto the result, and some can be upgraded again. See Enchanting.

Crafting mastery

Mastery is its own skill — it rises only by crafting, and it is the one number that touches every step: it is added to the refining roll, adds half its value to a recipe's success chance, and improves the odds that a failed craft leaves your materials intact. A successful craft grants full mastery progress, a failed one grants half.

Mastery stops paying at 80. Past that the roll no longer improves, and it is worth less the higher the tier — the top gear stays a gamble for everyone. No craft is ever a certainty (92% ceiling) and none is ever hopeless (5% floor).

How hard each tier is

Success is the recipe's own chance plus mastery. Averaged across every recipe of a tier, this is what you can expect — a beginner, a crafter at 40 mastery, and one at the 80 cap. Individual recipes sit a little either side of their tier's average.

Where recipes come from

Kill tasks, quest NPCs and area traders reward crafting recipes — the quest index lists over 40 NPCs that pay out recipes. Master crafters gather in the Mastercrafters Hall in Ridgefire.

The refining ladder

Almost nothing a recipe asks for drops from a monster. Raw materials are refined one tier at a time on a lit oven: drop the material on the fire and the refined version appears on the tile. There are 17 rungs — some materials climb three tiers before a recipe will take them.

Each attempt rolls 1–100 plus your crafting mastery against the difficulty below. A failed refine destroys the material, so climb the cheap rungs first and let mastery carry the expensive ones.
